Wife, Turn Back

Hey busy mama, working woman, tired wife struggling to keep it all together. Every day you tirelessly love and serve your family.

I see you.

I’ve been you.

I am you.

And I know by the time night falls all you want to do is find a moment of silence, take a nice long hot bah, or just collapse into bed.

But there he is – that hunk of burning love you married. Yes, the guy who swept you off your feet. Do you remember him?

I know today he is also the guy who leaves his dirty socks and underwear on the floor. He might be the guy who comes home to do his thing after work while you scamper around the house seeing all that needs to be done.

And I know you may be tired, frustrated and feel like he never helps around the house. If this is you, I want to remind you of a bible verse I recently read.

“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.”  Revelation 2:4 ESV. In a different version of the text, the NLT, it reads, “But I have this against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first.”

Now, these verses are not written to married couples. These verses were written to the people in the church of Ephesus. The passage is referring to the church losing its first love – their love for God, and for one another.

In verse 5 it says, “Turn back to me, and do the works you did at first.”

Here is the lesson we can apply to our marriage. When our love for spouse grows weary or cold, we need to turn towards our spouse and remember the first things. The times when we were dating and head over heels in love. Remember, staring into his eyes, and talking for hours. Or maybe for you, you used to make a point of weekly dates, or you kissed all the time.

Turn back and do those things again.

Spend some time this week thinking of the way things used to be between you and your spouse. Work this week to incorporate these activities back into your daily grind. Return to what you first loved about your husband. This will help you reignite the spark in your marriage when you remember your first love.

Wife Step: Write down what you loved about your husband when you first met him. Tell him these things, and post your list where you will see it often.
