Dear Wife Dreaming of Pursuing Your Passion
The tall, wild mustard weeds towered over our tiny bodies as the sun and midwestern humidity seemed to take over us. We hid in the tall plants as Dad approached us; our little bodies prepared for his frustration to be unleashed. He simply came to remind us we only had a certain number of hours to get everything done.
As he turned and left, we viciously fought over who was being lazy and who had pulled more of those dreaded weeds. We dramatically pointed our fingers at the weed pile then back toward the whole row that still needed to be pulled.
Looking back, Dad was always teaching us about what he often preached – that entrepreneurship was the best life. Crafting your own life and making the big decisions while seeing the fruits of your labor every day was unmatched in his eyes. Having no boss and being able to vacation with your family whenever you desired required no notice or approval.
He warned though, that if you ever wanted to chase that dream, it would be the hardest thing you would ever do. The unseen, endless rows to tend to wouldn’t necessarily be praiseworthy; yet the work would satisfy an inner passion often not shared or understood by others.
Years later having grown into the role of wife and mother, I found these responsibilities fulfilling, yet I’d find myself wondering if I would ever find the confidence to take the risk of entrepreneurship I so deeply desired.
I wrestled with questions like, Am I being selfish by pursuing something I am passionate about? Am I supposed to wait for the right time to start pursuing this? When is the right time? Why do I keep thinking about this dream? Is it even possible?
Do you find yourself asking questions like these?
With much prayer and processing, I’ve settled on some truths that I hope are helpful for you – a wife who dreams of pursuing your passion.
My friend, it is healthy to find fulfillment in the things God gave you a passion for. I often remind myself that God created this passion, fire, and drive in me for a reason. How would I be serving Him fully unless I followed it?
Creating a family is gratifying, exciting and precious.
Creating a business or passion is gratifying, exciting, and precious.
Even more precious is involving your family in creating both.
Mindset Change
As a wife and a mom, we set the temperature in our homes. When I realized this, it felt like a huge weight to carry. Until one night as I put my daughter to sleep and whispered “you can do anything you want in this world,” knowing this intersection where passion is pursued cultivates deep joy, wanting this for her life, and then realizing I never had said that to myself.
While the temperature in our home wasn’t completely broken, I had been using my family as my reason to stay within the perceived security of the corporate environment I was used to, not fully walking in the unique call God had for my life. Simply put, when we aren’t fully walking in our God-given dreams and passions, the longing in our souls creates silent unrest in our lives.
When we step into pursuing our passion, the fulfillment we experience is felt in every relationship, especially in a marriage. This holy intersection changes homes, and teaches our children how to celebrate who God made us to be more than any words ever could.
Embracing Your Unique Passions
I stopped ignoring and started embracing this passion in my life. I followed His call and stepped into entrepreneurship with no guide or blueprint. But that’s the beauty in deciding to pursue a passion – it starts with a decision.
Are you itching to step into something new? Have you been dreaming and wondering when to begin?
As I surrounded myself with other new entrepreneurs we realized we would create what we wished was available when we started pursuing our passions. That’s why we created a ‘blueprint’ for how to begin pursuing your passion and make it your reality. If you feel it’s time to stop ignoring that passion and begin taking steps to pursue it, you can find The Complete Entrepreneur Guide here, and join us in the pursuit of what God has created you for.
