The Meaning in the Mundane

March 1, 2022

By Heather Logan

What if there were no such thing as a meaningless task?

It can be so easy to get into a routine with life. In motherhood, marriage and work the days often blend together and seem meaningless. The long days can make it feel like you are just trying to make it through and survive the day.

Monotony in life happens. We all go through it, but simply “surviving the day” is no way to live the life that God has called you to live. God has entrusted you with important people and tasks each day and you get to decide how to steward what he has given you.

I want to encourage you that each moment of your day matters. Whether it is acknowledged or not, the things you do are seen and valuable. What you are doing in your home, your job and with your relationships are making an impact.

The seemingly insignificant moments in your day can bring glory to God.

I am in a season where the daily tasks never end and they are thankless. Wiping bottoms, scrubbing floors, doing dishes and folding laundry are constantly on repeat.

As a homeschooling mom of five young children, I rarely sit down throughout my day. Often at the end of the night when I think back on my day I wonder what I accomplished. I know I was busy the entire day, but what is there to show for it?

I wonder whether I failed or did a good job. Am I messing my kids up with my responses and lack of patience? Do they know my heart and prayer for them each day is to point them to Jesus? Oftentimes it feels like I’ve missed the mark.

Then God graciously reminds me that I am working for an audience of one. I am to be doing things unto the Lord, not for the praise and recognition of others or to please those around me.

Your attitude and heart toward the tasks in your day are a reflection of your heart for the Lord.

The Meaning in the Mundane

How you respond to what he has given you today is an opportunity to praise God and bring him glory or to grumble and wish your day looked different.

In Luke 16:10 we read, “”Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” (NIV)

When you are faithful with little, God sees it. He sees the way you serve and love your husband and children. He is there with you when you are cleaning your home for the 100th time that day. He knows the hours you put in at work doing a job with integrity and hard work. He sees when you choose honesty over cutting corners in your business and it truly matters to him.

When you are faithful with little, God can entrust you with more.

You get to choose how you view each day.

I want to encourage you to find five things that you are thankful for each day this week and write them down.

When you begin to praise and thank God for the season you are in, it begins to change your perspective and allows you to see all the good that is within the mundane.

It also reminds you that as you are faithful with what is put before you each day, he will continue to trust you with more and bring about his purposes in your life.

As you are faithful with what you are given today, you are making a great impact on those around you and on the Kingdom of God.

Wife Step: Take some time to remind yourself that what you are doing matters. As you are doing everyday ordinary things, praise God. Remind yourself that you only get one today, and make each moment count.
