Persevering as a Newlywed

If you’re like most couples, you initially have an enjoyable ‘newlywed’ stage of marriage.  You take the big plunge, and get to spend the rest of you life with the person you choose to love.

However, after the initial phase of bliss, many couples find themselves feeling they made the wrong decision.  Constant fights ensue, doors are slammed, and silence commences as spouses try to hurt their partner by not communicating with each other.  Many married couples feel like their marriage is failing. I know I did.

When my husband and I first married, we had the hardest time becoming one.  We were selfish, and needed to learn the beauty in serving each other.

But how could I do this as a wife, when I felt so alone, and ashamed that I had these feelings?

Truth be told, it’s hard going through a difficult season as a newlywed. In any difficult season of marriage, it is hard to see better days in sight. But better days are sure to come.

As wives, how can we persevere through a difficult season?

By keeping this verse in mind. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12 ESV)

You didn’t marry the wrong person.  On the contrary, your marriage was being attacked because you chose to love.  John tells us that Satan’s main goal is to kill steal and destroy anything and everything that he can. (John 10:10)  This includes marriage. If we are going to be wives who truly fight for a strong marriage, we must guard our marriage from the enemy.

How?

Draw close to God through prayer and fasting, bible study, and worship.  God promises that if we draw close to him, he will draw close to us. (James 4:8)  When you draw near to God, you’ll be drawn to your husband.  The health of your marriage is a direct reflection of the health of combined relationships with the Lord.  A strong relationship with the Lord does not give you a problem free marriage, but it gives you the ability to selflessly work through problems together.

So take heart, dear wife.  These days won’t last forever.

Wife Step: Write out the following verse and place it in an area you frequent (kitchen, bathroom mirror, dashboard of your car).

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12 ESV)
