10 Wife-Commandments to Restore Your Marriage
There are no easy or fast rules for marriage. No unseen code to break. No scientific formula guaranteeing 100% satisfaction.
But, our heavenly Father provides the answers we need. Because God created marriage, He helps us manage and sustain our marriages as we submit to His ways.
The Lord possesses all the knowledge to lead our marriage. Our job is simply to seek God’s knowledge.
So, instead of producing our own marriage commandments with good advice, let’s use the truths behind God’s Ten Commandments in Deuteronomy 5:7-21.
Keeping the original thought, while adding a little creative spin, here are ten lessons to apply to your marriage:
- You shall have no other gods before me. After God, our husband is our most important relationship. What “other” things or relationships do you put before God? Then, what about your man?
- You shall not make for yourself a carved image…for I am a jealous God. God is jealous for our complete loyalty and whole-hearted devotion. In the same way, our husband’s desire a loyal and devoted wife. Sexual and emotional faithfulness, and being your husband’s faithful friend is important. Do you feel you are loving your man with a steadfast, deep, and sure devotion?
- You shall not take the Lord’s name in vain. Sometimes we are careless with God’s name. Likewise, we want to take careful measures to protect the good name and reputation of our husband by not demeaning him to our girlfriends or in public or even to him. What can you do to speak love and respect to and about your husband?
- Observe the Sabbath to keep it holy. After the Lord created the world, everything in it, and us, He established a day of rest called Sabbath. It’s an entire twenty-four hours to remember God and set aside a day to worship Him and rest from labor. It’s a day to cease our work and trust God to provide. Do you practice the Sabbath? How about setting aside times and days to focus on your marriage?
- Honor your father and mother. Are we honoring our parents and husband’s parents? Maybe we can get better at helping with any needs of aging parents, inviting them for dinner, making sure to celebrate how “grand” they are to our kids, and keeping them informed of events and plans. If they live away, are we staying connected through Skype and Facetime calls?
- You shall not murder. Ruth Graham said she never contemplated divorce, but considered murder. We may relate to her humor and candor. But, do we stab our husband in the back or fatally wound his heart with our mean-spirit or words?
- You shall not commit adultery. This truth stands as is. Consider how emotional affairs and affairs of the heart are also infidelity.
- You shall not steal. Are we hiding spending, secret credit cards, or fudging on numbers?
- You shall not bear false witness. Do we lie to our husband? Do we slander him? Do we exaggerate our case or our side of the issue?
- You shall not covet your neighbor’s husband. Do we wonder if marriage would be better with someone else? Do we covet another woman’s husband, a man who seems to be a great husband?
