5 Ways to Pray for Your Husband in Ministry
Early last year, God completely redirected our family. My husband had not given much thought about full-time or even part-time ministry. Yet God swiftly, and suddenly opened a door that was perfectly timed, and totally unexpected for my husband to become the Minister of Music at a new church.
For years leading up to this time, I had prayed over my husband almost every day that God would open a door for him to serve and use the gifts God has blessed him with.
A simple prayer that God answered.
When my husband and I talked endlessly and prayed over this ministry role, I knew it was God’s answer to those words I uttered in private for all of those years. Yet, I have seen and heard far too much to not be warned heading into our second year of ministry at our new church. Because nothing puts a target on your back from the devil quite like being in ministry.
I knew I’d need to be praying specific prayers for my husband in ministry. Prayer is powerful, and it is answered at no other time than God’s right time.
This past year has been beautiful and deeply painful all in one breath. Yet, in it God has taught me the impact of prayer and bringing all things to Him. Since my husband started in ministry, I have consistently prayed five specific prayers for my husband weekly or almost daily. Prayers to keep my husband encouraged and protected.
If your husband is a Pastor, or working in some form of ministry (these prayers can be applied to every husband, in and out of ministry) here are 5 prayers you can pray for your husband.
- Father, keep him engaged and on fire for your Word. One of the quickest ways to find ourselves discouraged and out of touch with God, is to find ourselves out of His Word. Our source of strength is in Christ alone, by salvation alone, through His Spirit that dwells in us as a deposit (Eph. 1:14). We must pray for our husbands relationship with the Father through spending time in His Word. (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
- Father, protect his heart and mind from attacks of the enemy. The enemy wants our husbands tempted and defeated. They will not be effective in ministry, in their families, or their workplace if the enemy gets an inch of temptation in front of their faces (1 Peter 5:8).
- Father, help my husband to love people well. – Ministry and life requires us to love people well. In fact, it is a command God gives. (Love your neighbor as yourself, Matt. 22:39, Gal. 5:14). God can help him love those around him, even the critical, or hard to love.
- Father, equip my husband to stand firm in the Gospel, every single day. This isn’t just a prayer I pray for my husband. I pray this prayer for myself, my children, friends, and the church. When we rest in the truth of the Gospel, we can share hope with people around us who need it. No matter where your husband is – , whether he is leading worship on a Sunday morning or in the thick of it behind a desk at his day job, our husbands need daily reminders to rest in the truth of the Gospel. (1 Corinthians 16:13, Galatians 5:1)
- Father, grant my husband wisdom and discernment. Our husbands need wisdom and discernment straight from the Lord. Wisdom to lead our family in a way that is pleasing to the Father. He needs wisdom and discernment to lead our church in worship each week. (James 1:5)
By far, one of the greatest things we can do for our husbands is lift them to the Father in prayer. After all, God is in control of all things (including our husbands). Let’s trust in our faithful God to do the work, to protect, to teach, and to lead the men we love.
