When You Feel You’re Not Enough

May 5, 2021

By Jess Robichaud

I’m not enough.

If I don’t actively combat it, this lie can seep into the very fibers of my being. This lie can take a stronghold if I’m not careful.

A Lie About Not Enough

In my job…I’m not enough.

In my home…I’m not enough.

In my marriage…I’m not enough.

In my spiritual walk with the Lord… I’m not enough.

In my friendships…I’m not enough.

This lie has been my companion for such a long time. I find it really difficult to let it go sometimes. The lie subtly sits in the back of my mind and then rears its ugly head every once in a while.

This lie shows up as anxiety and overwhelm and panic and control issues in my life.

Does this sound familiar? Do you struggle with this lie too?

Let me tell you…the enemy is crafty. Lies are even more convincing when they are a partial truth. And that is EXACTLY what the enemy does here with this lie.

The Truth About Not Enough

The truth is that I’m NOT enough…but the sentence isn’t finished; the thought isn’t complete.

Here is the full truth: I’m not enough on my own…BUT with Jesus I am.

So, how do we actively let go of and combat this lie? Here are four truths for you to remember.

4 Truths for When You Feel You’re Not Enough

Embrace Weakness

Friend, God doesn’t expect us to have it all together. He can’t do his best work if we are fiercely trying to have it all together. It’s in our weakness that his strength and glory can shine. Meditate on this powerful verse:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

Identify the Idol

When we look at the Bible, idols come across as giant statues or golden calves. But idols are ANYTHING that becomes more important than God.

“Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.”

1 Corinthians 10:14 (NIV)

I really struggle with my idol being “me”.

When I embrace the lie that “I’m not enough”, I am focusing on how I think I need to be enough, how I need to have it all together, how I need to be everything for the people in my life…that everything depends on me.

But it doesn’t depend on me. It depends on God. I must be willing to be obedient to his calling.

Essentially, in these times, I’m trying to take over God’s role and I’m failing miserably. I’m becoming my own idol. But when we lay our idols down, we can trust in God more.

Let Go and Let God Be God

It’s okay that we’re not enough. We can’t be and shouldn’t be. If we were completely enough on our own, we wouldn’t need Jesus.

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

It’s time to let go of our need to hold everything together and give God back his job. His strength and his righteousness are enough.

Remember His Constant Love

There is nothing that we can do to make God love us more or less than he does right now. You are intensely loved by your Heavenly Father no matter what you do.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)

His love is not dependent on your actions. Rest in this truth.

Friend, know that you aren’t alone. This is a journey and it’s perfectly normal to struggle here. My prayer is that we would be able to let go of this not-enough lie and permeate our minds with God’s truth.

We are complete in Christ.
