3 Essential Questions to Ask Ourselves

March 21, 2022

By Jess Robichaud

There are three essential questions to ask ourselves in our journeys of growth. Here are the three questions I’m asking myself based on Ecclesiastes 3:1.

3 Essential Questions to Ask Ourselves

There is a season for everything. Have you ever thought about this phrase and the deeper meaning behind it?

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV) says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens”.

I found it really interesting to look at this passage as I started to think about what season I’m in now. I’ve been in a season of sowing and preparation for a long time. Life has felt like an uphill battle as the Lord has been working on my heart, and as I’ve been working through a few difficult things.

When I just hone in on the circumstances and individual events, life can feel overwhelming and draining.

What about you, friend? Do you struggle with honing in on the circumstances so much that you forget to look at the bigger picture…like me?

What if we zoomed out a bit and looked at what God was doing in a particular season? Could we take a step back and refocus our hearts to His greater purpose?

I’d like to challenge you (and myself) today and encourage you to zoom out and ask yourself these three questions…

3 Essential Questions to Ask Ourselves

What type of season am I in?

Take some time to reflect and identify the type of season you’re in.

Are you in a season of growth? Are you in a season of preparation? In a season of waiting? How about a season of grind and push? It could be that you’re in a season of trial? Or is it a different season that you’re in right now?

Define the season you’re in before moving to the next question.

What might God be trying to teach me in this season?

Once you’ve identified what season you’re in, then you can hone in even further to see what God might be teaching you.

What patterns are you noticing in your life? Toward what is God bringing your attention?

Is he wanting you to work through impatience? Anger? Or maybe he is wanting you to learn to rest in his presence? Maybe he is wanting you to learn to depend on him?

I’ve had various seasons where I felt that God was trying to teach me something. Some seasons it was learning to rest and depend on him and not myself. Other seasons it was faith. In another season it was patience. In this most recent season, it has been to trust him even when I don’t understand.

Where do you notice that God is refining in you this season?

Where/how can I serve him in this season?

No matter what season you are in, seek where God is wanting you to serve him.

If you’re a mom, this may mean that you are being asked to serve your kiddos and husband. If you work in an office, this may mean reaching out to a coworker.

Where do you see God calling your heart?

In the midst of daily life and tasks and expectations, it can be easy to just put ourselves onto autopilot mode. I am definitely guilty of this. I can get so caught up in the day-to-day monotony of life that I can forget the bigger purpose.

Remember that there’s a purpose to every season and that he will use every season for his glory.

Dear friend, no matter what season you are in, know that you are loved and that he is what gives you your purpose and your value. These three questions can help you evaluate where he wants you to be in every season of your life.

Wife Step: Identify one thing that you can do today to get out of autopilot. Then do it!
