Get Back the Glow in Your Marriage

My husband and I were so in love when we got married, and failed to think about what our hardest day might be like.

We never imagined we’d slam a door or yell the words, “I hate you.”

We meant our vows – til death do us part, in sickness and in health, for better for worse.

But then…life and marriage got hard. Have you ever wondered where the “glow” is – the one you had when you got married? Is there a way to keep the glow in marriage?

I’ve been married 42 years to my college sweetheart, and trust me, it hasn’t always been easy. Early in our marriage, I almost put the “glow” out of our marriage when I spouted off one night that maybe we should get a divorce. Thank goodness Keith roused like a pit bull defending his owner and told me to never use the word again. I was fortunate. If he hadn’t, we might not be married today.

Life is hard and at times the glow in our lives and marriage flicker.  Jesus warned that life would be hard by saying that the world will bring tribulation (John 26:33). The word tribulation means “pressure, a pressing in.” Isn’t that how we often feel? Pressured by everything we need to do and be?  If children, parents, and in-laws are added to the mix, there’s even more pressure. Finances, health, and friendships add to the pressure.

How do we get the glow if we’ve lost it and things aren’t right with God or our spouse?

Keeping the glow in marriage starts by our hearts getting right with God.

Jesus said, God is Spirit and we must be born of His Spirit and worship Him in Spirit and truth (John 4:24; Acts 2:38). When we have God’s Spirit in us, we have the glow of Christ in our spirit.

How can we get His Spiritual Light?

Respond “yes” to Jesus’ invitation to come to Him for the forgiveness of your sin.

Confess and turn from your sins.

Thank Jesus for dying on the cross for your sins.

Ask God to forgive you, and thank Him for the Holy Spirit; who strengthens and helps you be the wife you want to be.

Wife Step: Today, pray this prayer, and then spend five minutes reading God’s Word.

Lord, I invite you into my heart as Lord and Savior of my life. Forgive me of my sins. Thank you for your great love for me – for dying on the cross and for paying the ultimate price for me. Reveal yourself to me as I read Your Word.

In what ways do you wish your marriage had more of a spark?
